Where is Bagha?

Bagha is a village in Batala tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sri Hargobindpur, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sri Hargobindpur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028579, and it covers 267 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,076 people in Bagha: 544 men and 532 women, living in 198 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 267 hectares, the population density works out to about 403 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 978 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 123, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 627 people, about 58 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.21 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.58 per cent and women at 65.74 per cent. The census recorded 310 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 284 main workers, the largest group, 142, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 89 cultivators on their own land and 51 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 26 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bagha's land. Of the village's 267 hectares, 192 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (58 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (134 hectares). About 75 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 94 cultivators and 153 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
