History

Batala is an old city of Gurdaspur district with a special place in Sikh history. In September 1487, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's marriage to Mata Sulakhni took place at Batala — Gurdwara Kandh Sahib stands in memory of that event.

Batala was also an old industrial city, known for its foundries and machine tools. After Partition it remained the leading city of the border district.

Geography & people

Batala stands north-east of Amritsar, toward Gurdaspur. The 2011 census counted 158,621 people, making it the district's largest city. It is a commercial, educational and industrial centre.

ਬਟਾਲਾ ਗੁਰਦਾਸਪੁਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ। ਸਤੰਬਰ 1487 ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਮਾਤਾ ਸੁਲੱਖਣੀ ਜੀ ਨਾਲ ਬਟਾਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ — ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੰਢ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

ਬਟਾਲਾ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਉਦਯੋਗਿਕ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਫਾਊਂਡਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਸ਼ੀਨੀ ਸੰਦਾਂ ਲਈ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਵੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਹ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ।
