Early life
Ranjit Singh Bajwa was born on 14 March 1989 in the village of Wadala Granthian near Gurdaspur, Punjab. He began singing in the sixth standard, when a school performance earned him praise from his teachers, and his music teacher Master Mangal trained and encouraged him to compete. He won singing competitions for six straight years. He graduated from Guru Nanak College, Batala, did his post-graduation at Khalsa College, Amritsar, and earned a Master's in Music from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar — a formal grounding rare among Punjabi pop singers.
Career
Bawa rose to fame with his 2013 debut single 'Jatt Di Akal', which won the PTC Best Folk Oriented Song Award. His debut album Mitti Da Bawa (2015), released on T-Series, was awarded the Best World Album award at the 2015 Brit Asia TV Music Awards. For six years he had sung the folk standard 'Bol Miti Deya Baweya' in competitions — the song that made audiences call him 'Bawa'.
His later albums included Ik Tare Wala (2018), LOUD (2021), God's Land (2022) and Mitti Da Bawa 2 (2023). Singles like 'Jean', 'Yaari Chandigarh Waliye', 'Sher Marna' and 'Impress' charted on the UK Asian and UK Punjabi music charts.
Acting career
Bawa began his acting career in 2017 with the biographical action film Toofan Singh, playing the title role of the 1980s Punjabi activist Jugraj Singh Toofan. He followed with the period comedy Bhalwan Singh (2018), Mr & Mrs 420 Returns (2018), High End Yaariyaan (2019) and the romantic comedy Tara Mira (2019), produced by Guru Randhawa.
Music style
Trained in classical and folk idioms, Bawa brings a powerful, high-pitched folk voice to modern production — a bridge between the akhara of traditional singing and the studio polish of contemporary Punjabi pop.
Personal life
Bawa is unmarried and keeps his personal life private. He credits his mentor Master Mangal Singh for pushing him toward live performance.
Legacy
Ranjit Bawa represents the formally trained folk singer in an era of auto-tune: a Master's in Music, a Brit Asia award, and a voice rooted in the soil of Majha that carries Punjabi folk into the streaming age.
