Pathankot is the gateway city of northern Punjab, standing where Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir meet at the foot of the Shivaliks. Carved out of Gurdaspur as its own district in 2011, it is a major railway junction — the starting point of the Kangra Valley narrow-gauge line — and a cantonment and air-force town. Travellers bound for Dalhousie, Dharamshala and the Ranjit Sagar Dam pass through it.

History
Pathankot is an old town with a strategic address. Tradition traces the name to Paithan, and for centuries it stood on the threshold between the plains of Punjab and the hill kingdoms of Kangra and Nurpur. The British made it a railway junction, and in 1929 the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway began running from Pathankot into the hills toward Jogindernagar — a line that still operates today. Partition in 1947 turned the town into a border city almost overnight, and its military character deepened through the wars of 1965 and 1971, in which the nearby air force station played a frontline role.
For decades Pathankot was the largest town of Gurdaspur district. In July 2011 the Punjab government carved out Pathankot as the state's 22nd district, with the city as its headquarters — a recognition of its size and its role as the administrative anchor of the entire northern border belt.
Geography & people
The city sits at about 330 metres above sea level where the plains begin to rise into the Shivalik hills. The Ravi flows to the west, dammed upstream at Ranjit Sagar; the Chakki stream runs closer to town. National Highway 44 passes through on its way to Jammu, and the railway junction connects Delhi and Amritsar with Jammu and the Kangra valley. The urban agglomeration holds roughly one and a half to two lakh people, a mix of Punjabi, Dogri and Himachali communities, with a large defence and railway population.
Summers are hot, the monsoon arrives in July, and winters are cool with occasional frost — the hills visible to the north turn the weather a few degrees kinder than the deep plains.
Places of interest
About 22 kilometres away, the ancient Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple stands in caves on the bank of the Ravi, a revered Shiva shrine. Further upstream, the Ranjit Sagar (Thein) Dam on the Ravi — one of the highest earthfill dams in India, commissioned in 2001 — has created a vast reservoir that draws visitors and supports a growing tourism circuit. Within the city, the cantonment's orderly avenues, the railway heritage of the Kangra line's terminus, and the bustling markets of the old town make Pathankot a stop in its own right, not merely a place to change trains.
Notable people
Pathankot's fame rests less on famous natives than on the generations of soldiers, railwaymen and traders who have passed through it. As a garrison town it has sent thousands of men into the armed forces, and its name is woven into the military history of independent India — from the air battles over its skies in 1965 to the convoys that still roll north through its streets toward the border.
