Pathankot Police have busted a cross-border heroin smuggling module with the arrest of two operatives, including a woman, and the seizure of 7.823 kg of heroin in a coordinated two-stage operation, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.

The operation was carried out under the state government's Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign against drugs. Police say the module had clear cross-border linkages, and that packets recovered during the raids bore seal impressions with Pakistani markings.

Two-stage operation

Sharing details, Senior Superintendent of Police (Pathankot) Manpreet Singh said a team from the Special Branch acted on credible intelligence and intercepted Gurpanth, a resident of Vadala village in Amritsar Rural district, recovering 590 grams of heroin from his possession.

His sustained interrogation and a forensic examination of his mobile phone produced leads that took police to a rented accommodation in Fatehgarh Churian. The raid there led to the arrest of his associate Harmanjeet Kaur, a resident of Dhianpur in Gurdaspur district, and the recovery of a further 7.233 kg of heroin, taking the total seizure to 7.823 kg.

Pakistani markings on packets

Preliminary investigation has established clear cross-border linkages, the SSP said, adding that packets carrying distinctive seal impressions with Pakistani markings were also recovered. Videos relating to contraband consignments, along with financial transaction and account details, have come to light during the examination of the accused's devices.

Wider network under probe

DGP Gaurav Yadav said further investigation, including digital and technical analysis, is under way to trace the wider narcotics network, follow the financial trail and identify other persons involved in the module. Police expect the financial and digital evidence to yield further developments in the case.

The bust comes a day after security agencies in neighbouring Tarn Taran arrested a Punjab Police constable posted on anti-drone duty with around 15 to 16 kg of heroin near the international border, underlining how smuggling networks continue to test the border districts even as the state's anti-drug campaign intensifies.
