Two national commissions have stepped into the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa, asking Punjab's top officials for reports on the investigation and on protection for people who campaign against drugs.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of the October 13, 2026 shooting and sought an Action Taken Report, according to reports on Wednesday, October 14. In its letter, based on a complaint, it asked Punjab's chief secretary to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of individuals working against drug abuse and to prevent such incidents.

What did the NHRC and the minorities commission ask for?

The NHRC has sought reports from the Punjab Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo described the killing as a serious matter, Dainik Jagran reported.

Separately, the National Commission for Minorities has written to DGP Gaurav Yadav, seeking details of the investigation and the action taken so far. It noted that Jhota was a Sikh youth, and asked for the report at the earliest.

Where does the case stand?

Chemist Ashwani Kumar, accused of shooting Jhota during a confrontation over alleged illegal sale of addictive drugs, was arrested in Rajasthan's Salasar on October 14. The shooting was captured on Jhota's Facebook Live. Police say a pistol has been recovered and another suspect held for helping the gunman escape. These remain allegations until a court rules.

On October 14, Mansa authorities demolished parts of the accused's house and an angry crowd set his shop on fire. Jhota's family has demanded a CBI probe before the last rites are performed.

What has the government said?

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann called the killing unfortunate, said he had directed the DGP to look into lapses at every level, and said anyone behind a conspiracy would not be spared. He appealed for peace. Organiser reported that Jhota's mother has blamed the chief minister for her son's death; the government has not accepted that charge.
