History

Mukerian is an old settlement of the Doaba that grew into its modern shape with the coming of roads and railways. Its position on the historic route between Jalandhar and Jammu made it a natural halting and trading point, and the British-period railway station on the Jalandhar–Jammu line turned it into the commercial centre for dozens of surrounding villages. The town carries the nickname 'City of Gardens', a nod to the orchards and greenery that once fringed its streets.

After independence Mukerian developed as a sub-district (tehsil) headquarters of Hoshiarpur district, with courts, colleges and a large grain market anchoring its civic life. It sits in the Doaba's migrant belt, and like much of the region it has deep connections with the Punjabi diaspora in Canada, Britain and the United States.

Geography & people

Mukerian lies at about 257 metres above sea level on NH-44, roughly midway between Jalandhar and Pathankot. The Beas flows to the south-west of the town. The municipal council covers about 25 square kilometres and counted roughly 30,000 people in 2011. Punjabi is the everyday language; the town's bazaars serve a farming hinterland of wheat, paddy and sugarcane.

Roads fan out from Mukerian to Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Talwara and Pathankot, and the railway station keeps it on the main line to Jammu — which is why the town punches above its weight as a transport and mandi centre.

Places of interest

Mukerian's attractions are civic rather than monumental: the old railway station, the grain market in season, and the town's parks and gardens that earn it its nickname. The Shivalik foothills begin to rise to the north-east, and the town makes a convenient halt for travellers on the Jammu highway. Nearby Hajipur and Talwara, and the Beas river belt, are short excursions.

Notable people

Mukerian's notable contribution is institutional: as a tehsil headquarters it has schooled generations of the Doaba's teachers, lawyers and government officers. The town is also part of the Doaba's great migration story — many of its families have members abroad, and their remittances have rebuilt its houses, schools and gurdwaras over the last four decades.
