History

Tanda grew where the road and the railway met. The old Grand Trunk Road — the Sher Shah Suri Marg that has carried armies and merchants across north India for five centuries — passes through the town, and the British-period railway station on the Jalandhar–Jammu line made Tanda the buying and selling point for the villages around it. The town is officially Urmar Tanda, paired in name and daily life with neighbouring Urmar, and together the two form a single urban cluster in the Dasuya–Mukerian belt.

After independence Tanda became a municipal council and a mandi town of the Doaba, handling grain, timber and furniture from the Kandi hinterland. Like the rest of the Doaba it has strong ties to the Punjabi diaspora, and remittances have visibly rebuilt its bazaars and residential colonies.

Geography & people

Tanda lies at about 240 metres above sea level on the Jalandhar–Pathankot road, with Dasuya a short distance to the north and Hoshiarpur to the south-east. The municipal council counted 23,419 people in 2011. Punjabi is the everyday language; the town's population is a mix of Hindu, Sikh and Muslim communities, and its railway colony and mandi workforce give it a more industrial character than the villages around it.

The land is the flat, fertile Doaba plain — wheat and paddy in rotation — with the Shivalik foothills beginning to rise further north-east toward the Kandi belt.

Places of interest

Tanda's landmarks are commercial: the grain market in the harvest season, the timber and furniture bazaars along the old GT Road, and the railway station that still connects the town to Jammu and Jalandhar. Dasuya's Mahabharata-linked temples and Mukerian's gardens are short drives away, and the Kandi forests to the north-east make for green weekend country.

Notable people

Tanda is a town of traders, railwaymen and soldiers rather than famous names. Its distinction is economic: as the mandi for a cluster of villages, it has given generations of commission agents, timber merchants and transporters their start — the backbone businesses of the Doaba's small-town economy.
