Where is Bahian?

Bahian is a village in Gurdaspur tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Gurdaspur, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gurdaspur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028302, and it covers 145 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,290 people in Bahian: 698 men and 592 women, living in 228 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 145 hectares, the population density works out to about 890 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 848 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 147, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 194 people, about 15 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.58 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.16 per cent and women at 66.04 per cent. The census recorded 419 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 383 main workers, the largest group, 174, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 105 cultivators on their own land and 92 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 36 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (68 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (56 hectares). About 21 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
