Where is Chhina Bet?

Chhina Bet is a village in Gurdaspur tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dinanagar, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gurdaspur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028199, and it covers 271 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,724 people in Chhina Bet: 904 men and 820 women, living in 311 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 271 hectares, the population density works out to about 636 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 907 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 172, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 169 people, about 10 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.31 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.18 per cent and women at 76.1 per cent. The census recorded 507 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 139 main workers, the largest group, 59, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 42 agricultural labourers and 32 cultivators on their own land. A further 368 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chhina Bet's land. Of the village's 271 hectares, 243 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 200 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (200 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 58 cultivators and 219 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Gurdaspur, the tehsil headquarters, and Gurdaspur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Nadala.
