Where is Majithi?

Majithi is a village in Dinanagar tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dinanagar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dorangala community development block and is served by the Kothemajithi gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027910, and it covers 120 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,042 people in Majithi: 543 men and 499 women, living in 203 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 120 hectares, the population density works out to about 868 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 919 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 96, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 234 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 87.63 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93.27 per cent and women at 81.58 per cent. The census recorded 241 workers, about 23 per cent of the village. Of the 122 main workers, the largest group, 95, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 24 agricultural labourers and 2 cultivators on their own land. A further 119 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (107 hectares). About 13 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 3 cultivators and 76 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Dinanagar, the tehsil headquarters, and Gurdaspur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Passiyal, Miani Jhabelian and Uchha Dhakala.
