Where is Man?

Man is a village in Gurdaspur tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dhariwal, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kahnuwan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028356, and it covers 334 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,134 people in Man: 589 men and 545 women, living in 217 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 334 hectares, the population density works out to about 340 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 925 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 125, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 242 people, about 21 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.84 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.5 per cent and women at 70.86 per cent. The census recorded 380 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Irrigation came mainly from canals (82 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (81 hectares). About 29 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 4 hours a day. With 79 cultivators and 37 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
