Where is Sahari?

Sahari is a village of Gurdaspur tehsil in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dhariwal, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhariwal community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028050, and it covers 240 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,052 people in Sahari: 1,080 men and 972 women, living in 420 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 240 hectares, the population density works out to about 855 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 900 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 234, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 696 people, about 34 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.66 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.71 per cent and women at 67.13 per cent. The census recorded 578 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Irrigation came mainly from canals (160 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (47 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 225 cultivators and 107 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
