Where is Basa?

Basa is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and is served by the Neknama--Sanso gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031026, and it covers 172 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 262 people in Basa: 134 men and 128 women, living in 49 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 172 hectares, the population density works out to about 152 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 955 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 29, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 158 people, about 60 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 87.55 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.92 per cent and women at 85.09 per cent. The census recorded 86 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 35 main workers, the largest group, 17, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 12 cultivators on their own land and 6 agricultural labourers. A further 51 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Basa's land. Of the village's 172 hectares, 94 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 47 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (47 hectares). About 78 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 14 cultivators and 46 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
