Where is Bassi Kalan?

Bassi Kalan is a village in Hoshiarpur tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-II community development block and is served by the Bassi--Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031532, and it covers 42 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,356 people in Bassi Kalan: 1,202 men and 1,154 women, living in 473 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 42 hectares, the population density works out to about 5,610 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 960 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 222, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,317 people, about 56 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 87.11 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.55 per cent and women at 82.59 per cent. The census recorded 786 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 743 main workers, the largest group, 630, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 101 agricultural labourers and 10 cultivators on their own land. A further 43 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
