Where is Bhatrana?

Bhatrana is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031733, and it covers 490 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,082 people in Bhatrana: 548 men and 534 women, living in 228 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 490 hectares, the population density works out to about 221 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 974 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 134, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 669 people, about 62 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.06 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.11 per cent and women at 74 per cent. The census recorded 291 workers, about 27 per cent of the village. Of the 180 main workers, the largest group, 80, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 43 cultivators on their own land and 43 agricultural labourers. A further 111 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
