Where is Jalal Chak?

Jalal Chak is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and is served by the Jalal--Chak gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031018, and it covers 74 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 525 people in Jalal Chak: 273 men and 252 women, living in 107 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 74 hectares, the population density works out to about 709 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 923 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 63, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 185 people, about 35 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.43 per cent and women at 81.82 per cent. The census recorded 170 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 96 main workers, the largest group, 65, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 28 cultivators on their own land and 2 agricultural labourers. A further 74 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Jalal Chak's land. Of the village's 74 hectares, 58 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (58 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
