Where is Kukran?

Kukran is a village of Garhshankar tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Garhshankar, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Garhshankar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031953, and it covers 393 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,453 people in Kukran: 706 men and 747 women, living in 326 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 393 hectares, the population density works out to about 370 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1058 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 155, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 406 people, about 28 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.81 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.16 per cent and women at 71.92 per cent. The census recorded 476 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 162 main workers, the largest group, 64, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 45 agricultural labourers and 44 cultivators on their own land. A further 314 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Kukran's land. Of the village's 393 hectares, 358 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 105 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (105 hectares). About 28 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 15 hours a day. The census recorded 76 cultivators and 124 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
