Mehngarwal is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and is served by the Mehngarwar gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031408, and it covers 2,650 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,237 people in Mehngarwal: 636 men and 601 women, living in 260 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 2,650 hectares, the population density works out to about 47 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 945 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 153, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 596 people, about 48 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 89.21 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.65 per cent and women at 85.74 per cent. The census recorded 364 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 340 main workers, the largest group, 267, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 36 cultivators on their own land and 29 agricultural labourers. A further 24 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (102 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (30 hectares). About 220 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 38 cultivators and 38 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
