Where is Sarangwal?

Sarangwal is a village in Garhshankar tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mahilpur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mahilpur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031836, and it covers 117 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,534 people in Sarangwal: 798 men and 736 women, living in 317 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 117 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,311 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 922 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 154, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 616 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.96 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.91 per cent and women at 77.68 per cent. The census recorded 544 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 351 main workers, the largest group, 164, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 151 cultivators on their own land and 32 agricultural labourers. A further 193 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sarangwal's land. Of the village's 117 hectares, 92 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 60 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (10 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (50 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 172 cultivators and 112 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Garhshankar, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Tajewal, Bachhohi, Badhana and Suna.
