Where is Satnaur?

Satnaur is a village in Garhshankar tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Garhshankar, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Garhshankar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031959, and it covers 167 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,997 people in Satnaur: 1,008 men and 989 women, living in 428 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 167 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,196 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 981 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 208, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,086 people, about 54 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.91 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.15 per cent and women at 80.67 per cent. The census recorded 588 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 481 main workers, the largest group, 341, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 61 agricultural labourers and 52 cultivators on their own land. A further 107 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Satnaur's land. Of the village's 167 hectares, 135 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 130 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (130 hectares). About 27 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. The census recorded 64 cultivators and 84 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
