Where is Tagger?

Tagger is a village in Hoshiarpur tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 30 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031443, and it covers 127 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 369 people in Tagger: 183 men and 186 women, living in 81 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 127 hectares, the population density works out to about 291 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1016 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 38, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 95 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.62 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80 per cent and women at 69.28 per cent. The census recorded 120 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 26 main workers, the largest group, 25, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 1 agricultural labourers. A further 94 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Tagger's land. Of the village's 127 hectares, 126 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (126 hectares). About 1 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 15 hours a day. The census recorded 12 cultivators and 65 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
