Where is Jagatpura?

Jagatpura is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gandiwind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037862, and it covers 431 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,987 people in Jagatpura: 1,056 men and 931 women, living in 334 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 431 hectares, the population density works out to about 461 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 882 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 265, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 893 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.43 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.47 per cent and women at 66.87 per cent. The census recorded 637 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 576 main workers, the largest group, 212, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 204 cultivators on their own land and 156 agricultural labourers. A further 61 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (371 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (1 hectares). About 54 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 204 cultivators and 189 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Tarn Taran, the tehsil headquarters, and Tarn Taran town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Dhand, Thathgarh, Kasel and Aima Kalan.
