Where is Baghela?

Baghela is a village in Nakodar tehsil of Jalandhar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nakodar, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nakodar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030006, and it covers 586 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,822 people in Baghela: 936 men and 886 women, living in 318 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 586 hectares, the population density works out to about 311 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 947 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 221, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 925 people, about 51 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.33 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.14 per cent and women at 63.23 per cent. The census recorded 639 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 399 main workers, the largest group, 206, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 95 other workers in trade, transport and services and 93 agricultural labourers. A further 240 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Baghela's land. Of the village's 586 hectares, 540 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (540 hectares). About 45 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 226 cultivators and 276 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
