Where is Behar?

Behar is a village in Nakodar tehsil of Jalandhar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nakodar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nakodar community development block and is served by the Vehran gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030007, and it covers 320 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 776 people in Behar: 407 men and 369 women, living in 110 households, an average of about 7.1 people per household. Spread over its 320 hectares, the population density works out to about 242 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 907 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 112, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 646 people, about 83 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.07 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.91 per cent and women at 57.5 per cent. The census recorded 253 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 238 main workers, the largest group, 174, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 33 agricultural labourers and 21 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 15 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Behar's land. Of the village's 320 hectares, 256 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (256 hectares). About 64 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 176 cultivators and 36 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Nakodar, about 10 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Nakodar, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Baghela, Umrewal, Raipur Araian (Nakodar) and Awan Khalsa.
