Where is Hardo Sangha?

Hardo Sangha is a village of Phillaur tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nurmahal, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurmahal community development block and is served by the Hardo Sanga gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030011, and it covers 234 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 468 people in Hardo Sangha: 257 men and 211 women, living in 86 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 234 hectares, the population density works out to about 200 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 821 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 48, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 140 people, about 30 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.1 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.82 per cent and women at 64.71 per cent. The census recorded 171 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 98 main workers, the largest group, 34, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 26 cultivators on their own land and 23 household industry workers. A further 73 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (222 hectares). About 12 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 34 cultivators and 23 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
