Where is Hazara?

Hazara is a village of Jalandhar East tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Jalandhar, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalandhar (East) community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030348, and it covers 133 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,204 people in Hazara: 624 men and 580 women, living in 267 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 133 hectares, the population density works out to about 905 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 929 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 103, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 435 people, about 36 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.93 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.28 per cent and women at 76.35 per cent. The census recorded 462 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 443 main workers, the largest group, 282, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 117 cultivators on their own land and 39 agricultural labourers. A further 19 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (102 hectares). About 31 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
