Where is Jamsher?

Jamsher, also called Jamsher Khas, is a large village in Jalandhar East tehsil of Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region, standing just south of Jalandhar city on the road toward Jandiala and Nurmahal. The 2011 directory recorded Jalandhar, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. In the census record Jamsher carries village code 030362, covers 1,130 hectares and has PIN code 144020. It falls in the Jalandhar (East) community development block and has its own gram panchayat, and for political representation it sits in the Jalandhar Cantt assembly constituency and the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency. The code matters here, because the name travels: this is the large Jamsher Khas south of Jalandhar city, not the small Jamsher of Shahkot tehsil, which counted 512 people in the same census. Villages recorded around it include Khusropur, Jandiali, Kasampur and Diwali.

The village that stood still beside the city

Jamsher's census story is the strangest in this batch: the village barely grew at all. It counted 8,426 people in 2001 and 8,437 in 2011, eleven more people in a decade, while the city five kilometres away grew by more than a fifth. The reason shows in its workforce: Jamsher is already a city village in all but name. More than three quarters of its main workers work outside farming, its literacy is the highest in this batch, every school level is doubled, and it has its own railway station, a primary health centre and an allopathic hospital. Jamsher did not grow outward in 2001 to 2011 because it was already full: a dense, serviced settlement on Jalandhar's southern shoulder, holding farmland behind it that is still completely irrigated and sown.

People and work

The 2011 census counted 8,437 people in Jamsher: 4,372 men and 4,065 women living in 1,776 households, about 4.8 people to a household, the smallest households in this batch. Spread over 1,130 hectares, the density works out to about 747 people per square kilometre, by far the densest village in the batch. The sex ratio was 930 women for every 1,000 men, the best in the batch. Children up to the age of six numbered 759, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 3,640 people, about 43 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.78 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.13 per cent and women at 77.19 per cent, the highest rates in this batch by a wide margin. The census recorded 3,013 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 2,655 main workers, the largest group by far, 2,065 people, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of just 427 cultivators, 89 agricultural labourers and 74 people in household industries. A further 358 people were marginal workers. Counting everyone, the village held 447 cultivators against 143 agricultural labourers: farming survives here, but the working village runs on the city's economy.

Land and farming

Farming still covers most of Jamsher's land, even this close to the city. Of the village's 1,130 hectares, 927 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated, all of it from wells and tube-wells, with no canal irrigation at all. About 203 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the settlement, roads and ponds, already a fifth of the village. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The fields that remain are the vegetable and fodder ground of a city edge village, worked by a few hundred families while the rest of the village works in Jalandhar.

Schools

Education in the village runs at double scale: two government primary schools, two government middle schools, two government secondary schools and two government senior secondary schools were recorded in 2011, so children can study in Jamsher up to Class 12 with a choice of schools at every level, the fullest school record in this batch. The listings add private primary, middle and secondary schools. For higher study everything is at Jalandhar itself, a few kilometres away, where the listings place the nearest degree, engineering, medical, management and polytechnic colleges.

Health and daily services

Health facilities recorded inside the village in 2011 were a primary health centre, an allopathic hospital and a veterinary hospital, the strongest human health set in this batch, with no health sub-centre, dispensary or community health centre recorded. Treated tap water was available in the village, along with total sanitation campaign coverage, though no community toilet complex was recorded. Jamsher has a sub post office of its own, while the main post office was recorded 5 to 10 kilometres away. Banking is in the village itself, with a commercial bank branch and an ATM, though the cooperative bank was within five kilometres. The village also had a PDS ration shop, mobile phone coverage, an internet common service centre, an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker: 25 of the census directory's 32 facility fields were positive, the best record in this batch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 12 hours a day.

Faith in Jamsher

Religious life in Jamsher is served by the village's own gurdwaras and temples. Map listings name two gurdwaras in Jamsher Khas, the Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sahib and the Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha, standing a few hundred metres apart in the village. The wider Doaba calendar of gurpurabs, nagar kirtans and fairs runs through the village on the Jalandhar to Jandiala road, with the city's great gurdwaras a short ride north.

Getting there

Jamsher is one of the best connected villages in this programme. Major District Road 82 passes through the village, running from Jalandhar toward Talwan through Jamsher, Jandiala and Nurmahal, and the Grand Trunk Road is about 8 kilometres away. Both public and private bus services run in the village itself, with state and private buses from the Jalandhar bus stand on the Jandiala to Nurmahal to Talwan route. Best of all, the village has its own railway station: Jamsher Khas, code JME, on the Jalandhar to Nakodar line, where the rail listings record nine DEMU services a day calling, on the Jalandhar City to Nakodar and Jalandhar City to Ludhiana routes. Jalandhar city, the tehsil and district headquarters, is about 5 kilometres away.
