Where is Nussi?

Nussi is a village in Jalandhar West tehsil of Jalandhar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Jalandhar, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalandhar (West) community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030466, and it covers 419 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,079 people in Nussi: 1,040 men and 1,039 women, living in 453 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 419 hectares, the population density works out to about 496 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 999 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 185, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,138 people, about 55 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.47 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.51 per cent and women at 78.61 per cent. The census recorded 601 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 472 main workers, the largest group, 296, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 145 cultivators on their own land and 18 agricultural labourers. A further 129 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (53 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (320 hectares). About 38 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 4 hours a day. With 147 cultivators and 33 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Banking was available in the village itself, with a cooperative bank branch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 10 hours a day.
