Where is Tandaura?

Tandaura is a village of Nakodar tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nakodar, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nakodar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029995, and it covers 355 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,013 people in Tandaura: 493 men and 520 women, living in 172 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 355 hectares, the population density works out to about 285 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1055 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 114, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 379 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.31 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.67 per cent and women at 73.07 per cent. The census recorded 327 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 292 main workers, the largest group, 169, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 95 other workers in trade, transport and services and 28 agricultural labourers. A further 35 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (325 hectares). About 30 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 170 cultivators and 60 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Nakodar, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Mehatpur, Samailpur (Nakodar), Shah Salempur and Mehsampur (Nakodar).
