Where is Dala?

Dala is a village of Bhulath tehsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Bhulath, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nadala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029006, and it covers 127 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 756 people in Dala: 418 men and 338 women, living in 155 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 127 hectares, the population density works out to about 595 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 809 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 77, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 199 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.66 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.82 per cent and women at 83.5 per cent. The census recorded 287 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 249 main workers, the largest group, 121, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 68 agricultural labourers and 60 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 38 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (117 hectares). About 10 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 128 cultivators and 70 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
