Lakhan Kalan is a village of Kapurthala tehsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kapurthala, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kapurthala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029126, and it covers 1,214 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,593 people in Lakhan Kalan: 1,852 men and 1,741 women, living in 667 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 1,214 hectares, the population density works out to about 296 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 940 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 393, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,454 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.41 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.19 per cent and women at 67.35 per cent. The census recorded 1,323 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 1,175 main workers, the largest group, 620, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 314 agricultural labourers and 200 cultivators on their own land. A further 148 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
