Where is Basaimi?

Basaimi is a village of Ludhiana West tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ludhiana, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ludhiana-II community development block and is served by the Basaini gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033651, and it covers 264 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 603 people in Basaimi: 318 men and 285 women, living in 132 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 264 hectares, the population density works out to about 228 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 896 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 102, about 17 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 156 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.66 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.7 per cent and women at 60.61 per cent. The census recorded 283 workers, about 47 per cent of the village. Of the 251 main workers, the largest group, 104, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 79 other workers in trade, transport and services and 56 cultivators on their own land. A further 32 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Basaimi's land. Of the village's 264 hectares, 217 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (217 hectares). About 29 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 66 cultivators and 123 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
