Where is Chak Sarai?

Chak Sarai is a village in Khanna tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Doraha, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khanna community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033212, and it covers 259 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,534 people in Chak Sarai: 788 men and 746 women, living in 281 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 259 hectares, the population density works out to about 592 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 947 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 171, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 685 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.53 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.6 per cent and women at 75.3 per cent. The census recorded 565 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 333 main workers, the largest group, 198, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 86 cultivators on their own land and 39 agricultural labourers. A further 232 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (237 hectares). About 22 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
