Where is Dhurkot?

Dhurkot is a village in Raikot tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Raikot, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Raikot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033738, and it covers 393 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 924 people in Dhurkot: 496 men and 428 women, living in 175 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 393 hectares, the population density works out to about 235 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 863 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 90, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 148 people, about 16 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.14 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.51 per cent and women at 74.55 per cent. The census recorded 330 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 322 main workers, the largest group, 172, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 62 other workers in trade, transport and services and 53 agricultural labourers. A further 8 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dhurkot's land. Of the village's 393 hectares, 381 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (206 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (175 hectares). About 12 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 176 cultivators and 54 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
