Where is Khurd?

Khurd is a village of Khanna tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Khamanon, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khanna community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033237, and it covers 178 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 217 people in Khurd: 115 men and 102 women, living in 52 households, an average of about 4.2 people per household. Spread over its 178 hectares, the population density works out to about 122 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 887 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 21, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 92 people, about 42 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.02 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.88 per cent and women at 73.91 per cent. The census recorded 116 workers, about 53 per cent of the village. Of the 70 main workers, the largest group, 38, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 30 agricultural labourers and 1 household industry workers. A further 46 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Khurd's land. Of the village's 178 hectares, 157 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (157 hectares). About 17 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 40 cultivators and 30 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
