Where is Meharban?

Meharban is a village in Ludhiana East tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Ludhiana, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ludhiana-II community development block and is served by the Harishan Vihar, Dharampur, Prem Colony, Meharban gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033485, and it covers 296 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 7,873 people in Meharban: 4,248 men and 3,625 women, living in 1,557 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 296 hectares, the population density works out to about 2,660 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 853 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 1,015, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,765 people, about 35 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.74 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.03 per cent and women at 70.69 per cent. The census recorded 2,927 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 2,288 main workers, the largest group, 1,906, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 179 household industry workers and 148 cultivators on their own land. A further 639 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (154 hectares). About 142 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 170 cultivators and 67 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
