Where is Rangian?

Rangian is a village of Ludhiana East tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mullanpur Dakha, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dehlon community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033541, and it covers 312 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,721 people in Rangian: 917 men and 804 women, living in 329 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 312 hectares, the population density works out to about 552 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 877 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 156, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 224 people, about 13 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 89.33 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.8 per cent and women at 85.38 per cent. The census recorded 946 workers, about 55 per cent of the village. Of the 605 main workers, the largest group, 424, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 76 agricultural labourers and 72 cultivators on their own land. A further 341 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Rangian's land. Of the village's 312 hectares, 302 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (302 hectares). About 10 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 122 cultivators and 93 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
