Where is Sangowal?

Sangowal is a village of Ludhiana West tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ludhiana, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ludhiana-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033580, and it covers 343 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,642 people in Sangowal: 1,413 men and 1,229 women, living in 500 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 343 hectares, the population density works out to about 770 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 870 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 273, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,559 people, about 59 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.02 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.39 per cent and women at 75.82 per cent. The census recorded 803 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 690 main workers, the largest group, 434, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 191 cultivators on their own land and 51 agricultural labourers. A further 113 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (259 hectares). About 84 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 198 cultivators and 80 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Harnampura, Jaspal Bangar, Khanpur and Brahman Majra.
