Where is Shehzad?

Shehzad is a village in Ludhiana West tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Ludhiana, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Pakhowal community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033592, and it covers 194 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,213 people in Shehzad: 663 men and 550 women, living in 234 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 194 hectares, the population density works out to about 625 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 830 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 93, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 781 people, about 64 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.29 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.54 per cent and women at 73.05 per cent. The census recorded 386 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 370 main workers, the largest group, 292, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 36 cultivators on their own land and 36 agricultural labourers. A further 16 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Shehzad's land. Of the village's 194 hectares, 174 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (174 hectares). About 20 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 36 cultivators and 42 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Ludhiana West, the tehsil headquarters, and Ludhiana city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Dolon Kalan, Mansuran, Lalton Kalan and Pamali.
