Where is Jhall?

Jhall is a village in Amargarh tehsil of Malerkotla district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Malerkotla, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Malerkotla-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039535, and it covers 708 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,830 people in Jhall: 934 men and 896 women, living in 330 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 708 hectares, the population density works out to about 258 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 959 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 217, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 791 people, about 43 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.13 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.5 per cent and women at 70.64 per cent. The census recorded 525 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 474 main workers, the largest group, 228, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 156 other workers in trade, transport and services and 88 agricultural labourers. A further 51 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Jhall's land. Of the village's 708 hectares, 663 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (12 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (651 hectares). About 45 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 232 cultivators and 124 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school and one government middle school, so children can study in the village up to Class 8. Amargarh, the tehsil headquarters, and Malerkotla town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Jhundan, Burj Baghel Singhwala, Dialpura and Tolewal.
