Where is Biroke Kalan?

Biroke Kalan is a village in Budhlada tehsil of Mansa district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Budhlada, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Budhlada community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036067, and it covers 1,581 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,858 people in Biroke Kalan: 2,036 men and 1,822 women, living in 704 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 1,581 hectares, the population density works out to about 244 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 895 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 398, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,203 people, about 31 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 58.58 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 63.54 per cent and women at 53.13 per cent. The census recorded 1,243 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 1,102 main workers, the largest group, 572, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 290 agricultural labourers and 234 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 141 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,432 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (2 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 13 hours a day. With 582 cultivators and 330 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
