Where is Kotra?

Kotra is a village in Sardulgarh tehsil of Mansa district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sardulgarh, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sardulgarh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035942, and it covers 356 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 915 people in Kotra: 484 men and 431 women, living in 171 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 356 hectares, the population density works out to about 257 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 890 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 107, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 159 people, about 17 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.13 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.69 per cent and women at 55.99 per cent. The census recorded 301 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 247 main workers, the largest group, 164, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 45 other workers in trade, transport and services and 37 agricultural labourers. A further 54 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Kotra's land. Of the village's 356 hectares, 323 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 281 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (278 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (3 hectares). About 32 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 164 cultivators and 81 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Jatana Khurd, Jatana Kalan, Ghuduwala and Mirpur Khurd.
