Where is Maujewala?

Maujewala is a village of Dharamkot tehsil in Moga district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dharamkot, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dharamkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034218, and it covers 273 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 749 people in Maujewala: 395 men and 354 women, living in 127 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 273 hectares, the population density works out to about 274 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 896 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 100, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 172 people, about 23 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 55.93 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 63.17 per cent and women at 48.25 per cent. The census recorded 261 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. A further 72 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Maujewala's land. Of the village's 273 hectares, 248 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (6 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (242 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 136 cultivators and 41 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Dharamkot, about 20 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the village has its own railway station. Dharamkot, the tehsil headquarters, and Moga city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Chotian, Karahewala and Danewala.
