History
Morinda is an old qasba of the Sirhind region, one of the market towns that grew up around the imperial highway system of the Mughals and survived into the Sikh and British periods. The town sits on the historic route between Sirhind and Rupnagar, and like its neighbours — Bassi Pathana, Chamkaur Sahib — it carries layers of the region's history in its older mohallas. Under the British it was a tehsil town of the Ambala district system before the reorganisation that placed it in Rupnagar district.
The modern town owes its growth to the Chandigarh–Ludhiana highway, which runs through it and turned a sleepy market town into a corridor city. Mango and guava orchards, and the kitchen gardens that gave it the nickname Baghwala — the 'City of Gardens' — still characterise its outskirts, even as the highway frontage has filled with showrooms, dhabas and small industry. The town's schools and its municipal services have grown with it, and commuters to Chandigarh and Rupnagar now form a visible part of its working population.
Geography & people
Morinda lies on the Chandigarh–Ludhiana highway, about 20 kilometres from Rupnagar and 45 from Chandigarh, in the fertile plain between the Shivaliks and the Sirhind lowlands. The 2011 census counted 24,022 residents in the municipal council. Punjabi is the everyday language; Hindus and Sikhs form the bulk of the population, with a small Muslim community. The surrounding villages are intensively farmed — wheat and paddy, with mango orchards — and the town's grain market and fruit trade anchor the local economy.
Places of interest
Morinda's interest is in its living town rather than monuments: the old bazaar, the gurdwaras and temples of its mohallas, and the orchards on its edges that justify the 'City of Gardens' name. The highway dhabas on its bypass are popular halts for Chandigarh–Ludhiana travellers, and the town's parks and green avenues live up to the Baghwala title. It serves as a convenient base for visiting Rupnagar's archaeological museum and the Ropar wetland, both under half an hour away, and for the Anandpur Sahib–Chamkaur Sahib pilgrimage circuit of the district.
Notable people
Morinda has no nationally famous native in the documented record; its distinction is civic — a well-kept market town whose gardens, schools and highway bazaar serve the surrounding countryside. Its teachers, doctors and traders are the town's quiet pride. Its sons and daughters have made their mark mainly as teachers, traders and soldiers, the quiet backbone of a Malwa town.
