Where is Narur?

Narur is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030907, and it covers 1,149 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 705 people in Narur: 355 men and 350 women, living in 130 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 1,149 hectares, the population density works out to about 61 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 986 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 97, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 134 people, about 19 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.72 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.46 per cent and women at 80.19 per cent. The census recorded 173 workers, about 25 per cent of the village. Of the 136 main workers, the largest group, 66, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 58 agricultural labourers and 12 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 37 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (178 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (128 hectares). About 201 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 69 cultivators and 87 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Neighbouring villages include Khangwari, Bhatoli, Thana and Kakrali.
