Where is Panjor?

Panjor is a village in Pathankot tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sujanpur, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sujanpur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027478, and it covers 163 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,206 people in Panjor: 647 men and 559 women, living in 248 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 163 hectares, the population density works out to about 740 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 864 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 167, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 324 people, about 27 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.24 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.48 per cent and women at 67.28 per cent. The census recorded 336 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 133 main workers, the largest group, 99, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 31 cultivators on their own land and 2 household industry workers. A further 203 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (6 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (129 hectares). About 28 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 34 cultivators and 56 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
