Where is Hamjheri?

Hamjheri is a village in Patran tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Patran, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Patran community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036257, and it covers 719 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,080 people in Hamjheri: 1,644 men and 1,436 women, living in 569 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 719 hectares, the population density works out to about 428 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 873 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 354, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 652 people, about 21 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.34 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.52 per cent and women at 54.28 per cent. The census recorded 966 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 936 main workers, the largest group, 343, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 311 other workers in trade, transport and services and 206 agricultural labourers. A further 30 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (630 hectares). About 89 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 349 cultivators and 211 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Haryaoo Khurd, Shutrana, Bhutgarh and Rasauli.
