Where is Kalar Majri?

Kalar Majri is a village in Nabha tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bhadson, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nabha community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036439, and it covers 214 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,039 people in Kalar Majri: 552 men and 487 women, living in 204 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 214 hectares, the population density works out to about 486 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 882 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 106, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 555 people, about 53 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.24 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.59 per cent and women at 57.89 per cent. The census recorded 311 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 210 main workers, the largest group, 76, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 67 cultivators on their own land and 67 agricultural labourers. A further 101 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Kalar Majri's land. Of the village's 214 hectares, 189 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (15 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (174 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 75 cultivators and 137 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Nabha, the tehsil headquarters, and Patiala, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Mangewal, Sakrali, Halotali and Nanoki.
