Where is Safera?

Safera is a village in Patiala tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sanaur, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sanaur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036607, and it covers 402 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,427 people in Safera: 755 men and 672 women, living in 271 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 402 hectares, the population density works out to about 355 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 890 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 154, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 695 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 65.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.87 per cent and women at 62.44 per cent. The census recorded 457 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. A further 46 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Safera's land. Of the village's 402 hectares, 373 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (58 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (315 hectares). About 28 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 129 cultivators and 179 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
